Pictures That Lie

I chose the picture of Martha Stewart on the cover of Newsweek. I chose this picture because I think editing a woman's body to fit the "thin ideal" instead of the "healthy ideal" is wrong. The picture was taken for the cover of Newsweek magazine, in order to depict an article on Martha Stewart's life. The picture was manipulated by placing a model's body with Martha's face. It was manipulated to make Martha look better and to prove the claim, "After prison she's thinner, wealthier, and ready for Prime Time." This manipulation is harmful because it makes women and young girls feel the need to be unnaturally skinny, instead of healthy.

  1. I think you are completely right about the picture and its manipulation. I dont think that ayone should be manipulated to shoe the "thin ideal" as you said.

  2. I agree with you when it comes to the media and how the media portrays women. I just think its ridiculous to have that "thin ideal" coming up on all magazines.
